Universal Everything – Journey to Zero

Posted: December 11th, 2009 | Filed under: Design, Generalities | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

Awesome motion piece by Universal Everything for the Journey to Zero project. From the site:

This video is an audio-visual journey through time. A bold, simple metaphor for travel. From noise/inefficiency/waste – to – silence/economy/purity.
We start with the impact of a beautiful but maximal soundtrack, which through time refines, purifies and simplifies. Accompanying the soundtrack is a bold, graphic animation, which is influenced by the music, through visual reactions.

andyGilmore

Andy Gilmore is a “draftsman, designer, and musician based in Rochester, NY”. His work is geometric and restrained, and I guess at times a bit Op-art-ish. It reminds me a bit of Victor Vasarely (thank you cargo). Beyond the more clinical geometric and infographic type designs he makes for publications, he also has a very interesting style of illustration, often of birds.

Beautiful Animation which was nominated in 2008 for an Academy Award for Animated Short by director Josh Raskin and illustrator James Braithwaite and the 14 year-old who originally recorded the interview in 1969, Jerry Levitan.

teehupooAbove is one of the most insane looking waves on the planet, Teahupoo in Tahiti. The Billabong Pro Tahiti contest starts tomorrow (05/09/09) and will be broadcast live via interweb over the next few days, depending on the conditions. Good way to waste bandwidth and time if, like me, you have it.

Web Design: Type & Grids

Posted: April 24th, 2009 | Filed under: Design, Development, Grids, Typography | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

8ways/GridsTwo great resources for any web designer (or one who aspires) from Antonio Carusone. First up is an article he has written in his design/typography blog Aisleone: 8 Simple Ways to Improve Typography In Your Designs. It includes tips and rules of thumb to make your web designs more pleasing and easy to read. CSS examples included. How nice!

Next up is his also popular site (for design nerds) The Grid System. A great resource for both type and print, with grid templates for InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop. Lots of tips, articles, books and all things grid. Refresh some knowledge, or add to what you may have already acquired, some attention to the basics can improve your designs.

Georgia Guidestones

georgiaguidestonesIn Northeastern Georgia, on a rural hilltop stands the Guidestones. Carved out of the nearby granite quarry, this monolithic structure will provide instruction for the remnants of mankind after our demise. “Let these be Guidestones to an age of reason”—reads the title, “Maintain Humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature”—begins the tenents. In this fascinating Wired story, the author—Randall Sullivan, tells the story of this mysterious marker, the secretive group that commissioned it, and the bible-belt fury that still surrounds it’s message nearly 30 years after it’s creation. Hopefully this instrument for rationality survives the Christians as well as time. Book your site-seeing tour before it’s too late!

We ♥ Typography

welovetypographyYep, we do. Lovely new site, following in the footsteps of FFFFound and Delicious—where members collect images/URLs and tag their favorite type-related finds from the world-wide web. As the name might imply, WeLoveTypography comes from John Boardley, the maker of the fantastic ILoveTypography blog. Great source for inspiration.
